Very small mantle tissue beads are implanted inside the Pinctada fucata martensii oysters to form beautiful akoya pearls. Akoya oyster rarely produces more than two pearls whereas freshwater oysters are nucleated to produce about fifty pearls each. Akoya pearls normally take longer time to grow and the total quantity comparatively is not very large due to variable seawater climatic conditions and oysters’ mortality.
The Ancient Greeks were aficionados of jewelry, wearing simple to complex jewelry often complemented with effigies of the Greek Gods Eros, Nike, Artemis, Isis and Aphrodite. Mycenae, the ancient Grecian city ruled by King Agamemnon, was the center for jewelry production in the 2nd millennium B.C. The Mycenaeans created jewelry of beads in the shape of animals and shells, gold, amethyst, emeralds, pearls, agate and other semi-precious stones in the evolution of their jewelry production from 1,400 BC- 300 BC.
The Greeks created the cameo, produced by using an agate stone striated with pink, cream or brown also called Indian Sardonyx. As jewelry design and techniques became more complex, they developed a laurel wreath to be worn as a crown of honor by scholars and heroes, sacred laurel leaves represented Apollo, the god of prophecy and intellect. Pendant earrings bedecked with Nike, Eros or dove figurines became popular fashion of the times. Pendants in the shape of Amphorae (the classic two-handled vase shape) ornamented with enamel or gemstones, hung by a rosette and capped with the crown of Isis. Spherical or wide chains of gold were worn as necklaces with hanging calyxes or fruit and clasps of animal heads or dolphins. The Greeks were fond of wearing gold wreaths as ornamental headdresses, elaborately decorated with flowers, acorns, foliage or images of Eros and Nike. Greek gold rings were set with gemstones or sealstones (containing an engraving used for seals).
After the fall of Greece by Alexander the Great’s viscious conquest, the Hellenistic age begins, dating 330-27BC. Jewelry of this time was influenced by the Far East and Egypt, initiating new fashions, tastes and styles not only in jewelry design but overall aesthetics of life. Gold became the dominating metal accompanied by gemstones such as amethyst, cornelian, garnet, rock crystal and chalcedony during Hellenic rule.
Etruscan jewelry, highly influenced by Greek culture, produced a large amount of intricate and ornate jewelry styles that further influenced the Romans. The Etruscans developed granulation (where the surface of gold was soldered with tiny grains of gold to create a delicate pattern) dated to the 7th century BC. By the end of the Etruscan Period, as they were absorbed by the Roman Empire in the 3rd century BC, the ornate designs were replaced by more austere qualities and filigree (fine wire work with silver or gold) was utilized. The Phoenicians contributed colorful beads, inlay and enameling. Rings of this period included a scarab or single set gemstones in an oval formation set in an engraved bezel.

The type of jewelry that teens wear is most of the time derived from what they see on TV and in the magazines. The emergence of the MTV culture is one of powerful factors that affect teen jewelry. Teens try to attain the kind of image that their celebrity idols have so they imitate the kind jewelries that these celebrities wear.
You’re also likely to see teens wearing a yin-yang brooch or ring, a necklace with the Star of David pendant, and a fish inspired bracelet. Wearing the symbols particular to a belief, however, does not necessarily mean that the wearer believes in the principles behind these symbols.
The teens of today are also into cultures like gothic and punk and their clothes, their hairstyle and, of course, the jewelry they wear reflect this trend. You will see teenagers with pierced ears, tongue, and nose. They also have belly rings, toe rings, and all other kinds of rings that are meant for anything but the fingers.
Jewelry: Not Exclusive to Female Teens
In the past and even today, male members of a certain tribe of group wear certain articles of jewelry. However, boys aged 12-16, who are not members of a particular tribe or community, are also wearing jewelry these days. Unlike adult men who have limitations when it comes to wearing jewelry, teen boys use almost any kind of jewelry. They even wear jewelry that are commonly worn by girls. Amazingly, teenage boys still make them work!
Jewelry for teenagers has become so popular that there are now specialty stores that sell them, both in the local malls and in the internet. Jewelry for teenagers are cheap, colorful, engaging, and appealing so it is no surprise that manufacturing jewelry for teens has become a full-fledged industry.
Akoya name means saltwater in Japanese language and for decades pearl industry has been extensively selling these most lustrous pearls to the consumers and even now it commands a very decent share when it comes selling and buying pearl jewelry among pearl jewelers and consumers. Akoya pearls are the classic cultured pearls of Japan. Akoya pearls luster is intense, their nacre is thick and colors brilliant. Undoubtedly, they carry higher values than freshwater pearls.
Although Japan is the originator of producing akoya pearls, so to say, as Kokochi Mikimoto of Japan had invented and patented the bead-nucleating technology of culturally growing these pearls in the seawater. Akoya pearls are primarily cultivated in the sea salt waters off the coastal areas of Japan and China but in recent years China is producing in large quantity and their quality is exceeding remarkable. With new improved modern techniques of culturing pearls, it has become possible to harvest better quality akoya pearls. It takes about 3-5 years to grow nice quality akoya pearls and pearl farms in China and Japan constantly monitor its growth during this period in order to get good harvest as well as good quality akoya pearls.

The next element to consider is the gem stone. A natural gem stone will come to life in a 10k gold ring setting. Peridot, blue topaz, citrine, amethyst, ruby, garnet, emerald, and sapphire would each make for the perfect natural gem stone to coordinate with a 10k gold ring setting.
Finally, when considering buying affordable rings, think about the size and cut of the natural gem stone. Although the jewelry industry would lead you to believe that bigger is better, a number of small stones in an elegant and unique designer setting can be even more striking than a single large natural gem stone. For example, imagine ten small round cut diamonds on either side of five small rubies in a 10k gold ring setting. Or consider the glitter and sparkle of six marquise cut blue topaz stones set as flower petals surrounded by thirteen small round cut diamonds. Nine small round cut diamonds in a heart shaped setting with an elegant band can be breathtaking.
Whether you’re looking for a promise ring, an engagement ring, or a gift for that special anniversary, birthday, or Valentine’s Day present, you don’t have to spend a fortune. Affordable rings will convey your feelings and be worn with appreciation by the woman you love.
Do you know a woman who is about to retire? Someone who has touched your life somehow? She could be your teacher, a good colleague, a relative or even your mother. Have you ever wondered of how to show them that their life long efforts will always be remembered?
Enough of the shawls or scarves, or even of the chocolates and flowers. Just think how many times she must have received these gifts in a year. Her retirement day is surely not the same as any other occasions gone by. It is a once in a lifetime event, and because of that, it deserves a special and unique gift.
And what could be more special and unique than a set of pearl jewelries? No, your gift doesn’t have to be very expensive. Unlike before, only the richest of people could afford them, but not anymore.
Yet, despite the fact that there are already pearls that almost anyone could afford, pearls still manage to give any woman wearing them a regal air and a classy look. Pearls can easily match any outfit a woman might wear – be it a business suit, a party dress
There is no arguing about the beauty of turquoise, and in particular, turquoise jewelry. It gives off a warmth and elegance that few other gems can come close to matching.

Love of Jewelry: If the Price is Right
It is sad to note that jewelry as a form of art is actually taken for granted. The art in a jewelry piece is less noticed and less praised compared to the art in paintings and sculpture.
Sure, people will gaze in wonder at a four-carat diamond on an engagement ring. Certainly, people will notice if you wear a diamond tennis bracelet to your prom party. However, the appreciation for jewelry is almost always confined to the cost of the item and the prestige that goes with owning such an obviously expensive piece. The appreciation lies, therefore, not on the work and the artistry that goes into the production of the jewelry piece. It lies more on its weight, its size, and its prize tag.
This single-minded focus on the cost of jewelry as well as the neglect of the jewelry’s form, design and details has taken away the appreciation for jewelry as a true form of art. Jewelry has regressed to nothing but an expensive and brazen wealth exhibit.
This disconnection from the true and pure meaning of jewelry can be attributed to the materialistic mindset that’s prevalent today. Jewelry is viewed as a status symbol or an investment, thus the price of the jewelry is given more weight. Unless people learn to appreciate and give value to the artistry behind the design of the jewelry, true appreciation of the art of jewelry making may be slow to come by.
There’s a profound truth to the saying, “It’s not the cost of the gift, but the thought behind it.” Gifts of jewelry create precious memories, yet all too often the person giving the gift feels as though he must spend more than he can afford in order to demonstrate his feelings to the woman he loves. Unfortunately, the jewelry industry often reinforces this belief, going so far as to offer guidelines about what a man should spend on an engagement ring, for example. (The “guideline” is two months’ salary.)
For most men, it’s not realistic to go deeply into debt in order to buy jewelry. Indeed, extravagant jewelry often is locked in a vault or a safe, rather than being worn and enjoyed by the recipient. There are many affordable rings available that can express feelings of love and appreciation, and which will be worn with pride by the recipient. Discount rings can be unique and elegant, with a style that mimics the most costly designer jewelry. In contrast to guidelines provided by the jewelry industry, you can buy affordable rings that your recipient will treasure.
When selecting a ring, think about the setting. A 10k gold ring is as beautiful as a 14k gold ring, but is a more affordable purchase.
Do you often go shopping on line? There are a lot of interesting things on there. One of the most popular sections at for any occasion is pearl section. Here, you’ll find hundreds of Tiffany-inspired choices of wholesale pearl bracelet, pearl necklace, cheap pearl strands, pearl beads, cultured pearl ring, multi-strand necklace, cheap pearl earing, tin cup necklace , cultured pearl pendant, single strand necklaces … You can’t go wrong when you choose any of these exquisitely designed masterpieces for yourself or your friends. The beauty speaks volumes about your good taste in jewelry design.I would like to share good things with you. Let go to wholesale pearl jewelry together.

If the rain was pure, the pearl was lustrous. If it dull, then it didn’t rain. If it’s merely cloudy then the color of the Tahitian pearl is spoiled. Lighting and thunder were also factors in the cultivation of the Tahitian Pearl. Lighting stunts the growth while thunder can cause the shellfish to miscarry and produce hollow husks instead of precious pearls.
Pearls grown inside the mussel or oyster do have a gritty feel to the tooth.
Still, some are hard to detect without very thorough testing sometimes using solvents and acids which attack the real pearl nacre but not the plastic fakes and visa versa.
Other than that, a look at the drilled holes in the beads will help. Since the pearl is formed naturally without a hole, the hole must be drilled. The surface of the pearl at the drill hole will not “sink in” or “rise up” as is seen in many fakes that are formed and coated with the holes already made to the core. In the real pearl, the nacre will be smooth with the drill hole and might even be chipped a bit.
Some folks recommend having a dentist do an x-ray to see what is inside. Still, unless a person is very, very familiar with reading the images the results are very iffy. A core will look like a core whether in a fake or a cultured pearl. A core will not be present to any large extent in a pearl formed freely in the ocean but those pearls just are not around or to be had except in very small sizes.
Using a good loupe (hand held magnifier) of 10 powers is likely the best home test. Of course, try the teeth first! Then look at the drill holes and the surface compared to a good cultured pearl.
Poets from the Orient believe that every sixteenth day of the Nisan month each year, the pearl oysters rise up above the sea. Their shells open up in order to get raindrops falling from the skies above.
Although Japan has been renowned for its pearl production till now, the trend is slowly changing with China emerging as the new contender for accounting of the largest production of Akoya pearls. However, majority of the Akoya pearls produced by china are still imported to Japan for processing purposes.
All things that glitter draw the eye, and jewelry tops this list. The love of jewelry pieces knows no social class or social boundary. There are the faux pieces of jewelry worn by children, the belly rings of teenagers, the class rings of college graduates, the engagement ring of newly engaged couples, the wedding ring of married couples, the heirloom jewels from the grandparents. Everyone is touched by the power and lure of this seemingly magical artwork. However, do people really appreciate jewelry as a work of art, or do people just regard jewelry pieces as embellishments?

Freshwater pearls fished from the rivers in the USA are natural pearls but nowadays, most freshwater pearls are also cultured in freshwater pearl farms.
In any event, naturally forming or cultured, such pearls are formed in the oyster or mussel and are not fakes. The real difference in the totally natural pearl and the cultured pearls is what makes the pearl start to grow and the thickness of the nacre. Nacre is the pearly layers that make a pearl so lovely. The natural pearl will have very thick nacre, generally forming in concentric rings around some starting source or irritation to the mollusk.
A large natural pearl is very, very rare. Cultured pearls generally use a “core” of mother-of-pearl, the shell of the mollusk. The bead core goes into the mollusk and nacre is formed around the core. The core determines the overall shape of the pearl. How long the oyster is allowed to let the pearl grow determines the thickness of the nacre. Thicker nacre is better. Best of all is thick nacre and a smooth, almost blemish free surface.
There is not a one-in-all test I can recommend. Some of this will simply require some “pearls” of real and fakes for comparison.
Even the jewelers are fooled once in a while but not often.Have you seen Mabe pearls? These are the large “half pearls” often seen in rings and pendants. Some years ago some really good fakes hit the market and were being sold at very competitive prices’that is, compared to the real ones. Many were sold and bought as the real thing! The testing for these required disassembly of the fake mabes plus solvent and acid tests. A lot of buyers were taken in on this one, likely never to know they bought and later sold fake mabe pearls.
When it comes to bestowing gifts to your lady love, nothing can surpass the charm of traditional pearl jewelry. Pearls have always been one of the most charming jewels among the other exotic designer items.
A pearl can be best described as an extremely hard and rounded object which is formed within a soft tissue of a living mollusk. Only those pearls which are judged to be of highest quality are deemed fit to be used in the business of jewelry design. However, there may be varying standards among all the high quality pearls which are used for the purpose of jewelry designing. These can be classified on the basis of their luster, color, size and lack of surface flaw. Out of all these aforementioned attributes, luster of a pearl is one of the factors which play an extremely important role in determining the true standard of this gem.
There are a variety of designs available in pearls, depending upon their size and shape, such as rounded, tear drop, semi-round and button pearls. One such famous category of pearls is Akoya pearls.
Though this interesting website about pearl jewelry, you can find the highest quality custom freshwater pearl beads, freshwater pearl strands, freshwater pearl neckalce, freshwater pearl bracelet, freshwater pearl ring, freshwater pearl earrings, freshwater pearl pendant, sterling silver jewelry, single strand necklaces… online. Gently wipe off your pearls after every wearing using a soft, damp cloth. If you spill, clean it immediately, especially if the pearl contacts acidic food. Use a soft cloth moistened in fresh water, followed by a separate drying cloth. Wrap pearl jewelry in a soft cloth (damp linen prevents dehydration) and store them in a separate jewelry box. Most people should have their pearls restrung about once per year.
Pearl grades
Most saltwater and freshwater pearls are graded on a four-point scale (AAA; AA; A or B). AAA pearls are closest to spherical and have the highest luster; in strings, they are most closely matched in size. B pearls have little luster and vary greatly in shape, color, etc., and may have obvious blemishes. A special system is used by Tahitian pearl traders, Tahitian pearls are ranked from A thru D using criteria similar to the salt and freshwater systems. So, if someone tries to sell you an A or B-grade pearl, be sure you know who gave out that grade!
Old wives’ tale?
You really can tell if pearls are real by rubbing them against your teeth! Because pearls are natural creations, they are not perfectly round. The surface imperfections of real pearls feel a little rough or gritty against the teeth. Imitation pearls will feel smoother, almost slippery–sorta’ like the guy who’s trying to palm them off as the real deal!
Regardless of when or why you choose pearl jewelry, get what you pay for by knowing what to look for.

Many separate events have changed and influenced the designs that modern jewelry designers produce. If you look at these designs carefully you may notice their inspiration from other world events. If you look at jewelry around a century ago you may notice that the designs were influenced by the atom bomb. There are many star burst and diamond spray designs available at this time.

Varieties of fashion earrings are also dominating the wholesale jewelry market these days. Made from plastics, beads, glasses, coconut shells, jute, oxidized and copper metals, the wholesale earrings are designed in keeping with the latest style statements. The earrings look smart and trendy in casual outfits.
A while back before platinum prices went up so much and the “spot price” for platinum was $700 the prices were a lot different. Now, today with a spot price of $1187 per ounce. The spot price is for pure platinum metal, as traded and bought on metals markets. This price changes and with it also change the costs of platinum jewelry parts.
At the old $700 price, the 2.25mm shank would run about $450 and at today’s price about $$650. The prong setting was at about $205 and today is $306.
There is competition from jewelers who are still selling( perhaps foolishly) at the old prices and higher prices discourage customers. Today, at where I work we would not mark-up the platinum as much as we did a year ago.
The total price for the shank and setting mentioned would be sold for about $800. This is for the parts and no labor included.
To assemble the ring, size and set the stone would run about $150. I don’t know if your ring requires more work than assembly of the head to the shank, sizing and stone setting. That added work could account for the labor charged. Then again, if only “putting together” the labor seems high to me.
Perhaps the cost is balanced out with the lower price for the head. I don’t know what is going on with the jeweler with whom you are dealing.
All in all, the platinum prices are not out of line, but the head is too low unless very light weight. The labor seems too high. Totals are not that far off from the price charged you.
Then again, there is not a real excuse for charging more than the original estimate unless you had been informed that parts are going to cost much more due to rising platinum prices. Perhaps the jeweler is sticking to original head costs and making up the difference in labor, who knows. In any regard, sight unseen, the price total is not far off what I quoted. Keep in mind I picked a fairly medium heavy shank and a heavier than usual head. I might be comparing apples and oranges here and that should be kept in mind.
On some day, one of my friends carry a wide selection of pearl jewelry, from pearl beads, cultured pearl strands, freshwater pearl neckalce, pearl bracelet, wholesale pearl ring, freshwater pearl earrings, other shaped pearls and cultured pearl pendant, freshwater pearl earrings to cheap sterling silver jewelry and full sets of pearl jewelry, expertly hand-crafted using only the fines pearls by pearl wholesale store to me. White rings can be found anywhere you shop for jewelry. White palladium alloys are soft and are great for setting gemstones. The highest quality white gold is usually at least 17 karat, and made up of gold and palladium, and sometimes even trace levels of platinum for weight and durability, although this often requires specialized goldsmiths to fashion the alloy to the desired shape.
There are many styles and types of jewelry out there today made from all sorts of materials but gold and diamonds have been used for centuries. What ever the reason you are buying this fine piece of jewelry for I hope this little article gave you some basic info on gold and diamond jewelry.
The news I have gotten is that earrings purchased or received within a few years may likely be replaced if the manufacturer is identified; however, if the earrings are several years old, that style may no longer be available for direct replacement. A first step which you have likely considered is to go to the business selling the earrings in the first place. That business would be most able to quickly identify the vendor and perhaps replace the missing one. Keep in mind, the earrings may only be available in a pair, not a single unit.
To identify the maker can often be difficult and I stopped trying to do that for questioners here at allexperts. Many makers are out there and much jewelry is imported with various makers’ marks. Identification becomes almost the job for a detective armed with books and books of makers marks! To read the markings which are generally small on earrings, you will need to get a good 10x lens or go to a jewelry store with a microscope and ask if they can read the mark or let you have a look. Still, the mark if recognized by the jeweler will help but if unknown you are back to a difficult task.
Then, ask the clerks about replacing the missing earring and if they can order a “mounting” or similar earring from their vendors. If so, you are in luck! If not, the jeweler can look at the earring and see if that is an item they can make for you. Keep in mind; cost will likely be more than the original price since this may turn out to be one-of-a-kind work.
Often, a similar design may be purchased and the jeweler can modify to make the purchased earring match the original. This last approach is less costly than having the earring made from scratch. As last resort, try a jewelry business specializing only in custom work to have the item made. I would try that business last since many full service jewelers who do custom work have large vendor bases to check for an earring which may be purchased, avoiding the need of custom work. The jeweler who does strictly custom work will likely not ha

To get started all that is needed to clean gold jewelry is a mild detergent and a soft brush, an old toothbrush works great for this process. Dip the brush in the detergent and gently scrub the item, paying attention to the small cracks and crevices. Rinse the item thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. The cloth should be a professionally recommended polishing cloth to ensure the jewelry isn’t scratched during the polishing phase. This will take away the dirt and grime that can build up from normal use.
If the jewelry has heavy caked on dirt it might be necessary to make a solution of one part ammonia and six parts water, and then soak the piece for 1 to 2 minutes. This should loosen the grime and make it easier to brush away. After brushing and rinsing, it is a good idea to use a soft cloth to polish a shine onto the jewelry.
There are some things that can be avoided to ensure many years of enjoyment from your gold jewelry. For example, avoid interaction with chemicals. Some everyday chemical combinations can be harsh on gold. Cleaning products can affect the surface of the gold jewelry robbing it of its natural sheen. Even products that are used on the skin such as lotions, bleaches, or hair dyes can be harmful.
Wearing jewelry made other metals should also be avoided. Gold is a softer metal and can be damaged when worn in conjunction with a harder metal, such as silver. The friction can scratch or elevate the wear of the piece reducing its life. Also be aware of where you remove your jewelry, setting on the edge of the sink can sometimes end in tragedy when your ring rolls down the drain. Following these simple tips can help in extending the life and enjoyment of your gold jewelry.
I love every single piece of Tom Binns jewelry. Usually I like one or two pieces of a line of jewelry but in this case there is not a single piece of his jewelry I dislike. It is unbelievable to me that he figured out how to make pearls rock. Pearls are for nice girls but thankfully not in this case.
Any of Tom Binns earring, bracelets, and rings make a subtle but bold statement – especially if you are wearing a nice suit and/or packing around a kid. Tom Binns jewelry works for the high-end crowd that wants to be edgy but not trashy or look like they are trying too hard to be hip or young. Not that the young hip crowd won’t be wearing this jewelry.
He was the CFDA Fashion Award winner in 2006 and the Accessory designer of the year. He is from Ireland and graduated from Middlesex Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in jewelry design. His influence is “punk couture”. All of his pieces are one of a kind.
